Horus is an ancient Egyptian sky god in the form of a falcon whose right eye was the sun, and the left eye represents the moon.  The ancient Egyptians had many different beliefs about Horus, one of the most common beliefs was that Horus was the son of Osiris and Isis, thus when Seth murdered Osiris, Horus fought with Seth for the royal throne of Egypt.  Horus lost his left eye during the battle with Seth, and thus the different phases of the moon represent the healing of Horus' left eye; Horus was chosen to be the ruler of the living world after the battle.
