Artemis was the Greek goddess of the hunt, wilderness, and chastity (Diana is the Roman equivalent). She is the protector of young girls and was believed to have assisted in delivering her twin brother, Apollo, right after she was born, leading her to become the god of midwifery. Artemis has sworn to always be a virgin and never marry. Virginity is an important aspect of Artemis’ entire persona, the ancient Greek culture deemed virginity is a prerequisite to marriage and married women belong to her husband. Thus, Artemis’ virginity symbolizes her power and independence; in her tales, she constantly ran into men who tried to seduce or rape her or her companions, only to have the goddess of chastity deliver swift justice and punishment to them. Artemis is one of the most famous Greek deities, as with her Roman counterpart, Diana, her temple was one of the Seven Wonders of the World – a remarkable construction of classical antiquity unfortunately destroyed by the Greek arsonist Herostratus.
