Mankind has been cleansing sacred space and living quarters since we lived in caves and huts. Incense burning began when man first realized that certain trees such as pine or plants such as aromatic herbs smelled good when burned. The best was reserved for their gods and goddesses.

Every culture has a practice of burning scared herbs and woods.

The indigenous peoples of America burn white sage in a Sacred Sage Smudging Ritual. This practice has now become widespread in mainstream culture and especially so among pagans, witches and wiccans and practitioners of ceremonial magick.

Some feel that burning white sage is cultural appropriation and should only be practiced by indigenous peoples. That said there are many alternatives and parallels if you wish to avoid White Sage. For example, English Cottage Witches burned bunches of dried blackberry stalks, known as “witches whisks” to create sacred space and protect their circle. We sell these in our Traditional Witchcraft section. And as said, every culture burns pines, aromatic woods and herbs…

OUR SAGE AND ALL OUR SMUDGES ARE GARAUNTEED ETHICALLY AND SUSTAINABLY AND RESPONSIBLY SOURCED BY OUR SUPPLIER!

Folks always ask us how to use smudge wands. To banish or smudge your home of negativity or the unwanted, first open your windows and doors. Light you smudge, say a smudging spell or prayer. MEAN IT! Shout and yell “Get out! Begone”. Use a classic banishing phrase in Greek or Latin such as “Hekas Hekas Este Bebeloi!” or "procul o procul este profani". Waft the smoke everywhere, up the walls, around the doors and windows! Keeping yelling! Magick is intentional – you need to put the effort in and be committed! Don’t be a mouse!

Here are a few generic smudging prayers…

Goddess, Great Mystery

Source of all knowing and comfort,

Font of all love,

From whom we come and return,

Cleanse this space of all negativity.

Open the pathways to peace and understanding.

Love and light fills each of us and our sacred space.

Our work here shall be beautiful and meaningful.

Banish all energies that would mean us harm.

My eternal gratitude.”

“Smoke, air, fire, and earth, cleanse and bless this home and hearth.

Flatus, Ignis, Aqua, Terra! FIAT! Let there be light!

Drive away harm and fear, only positive energy may enter here.”

“I have opened this space to love and affection; may the goddess around me benefit my space. May she come with nurturance, compassion, forgiveness, and truth.”
