Asclepius was a demi-god hero and the Greek god of medicine. He was the son of Apollo and Triccaean princess Coronis. Asclepius was raised by the centaur Chiron, who instructed him in the art of medicine. Under Chiron’s guidance, Asclepius became a supreme healer surpassing both his father and mentor. Zeus was afraid that Asclepius’ ability to restore the dead can offset the balance between humanity and the gods, thus he slew him with a thunderbolt crafted by the Cyclopes. When Apollo learns of his son’s death, he slew the Cyclopes in return and was forced to serve Admetus by Zeus.
